MANA 2019 Speaker
Afua Hassan, LM created her community in Houston after moving from Connecticut and graduating from the Houston School of Midwifery in 1984. In 2011, she founded The Birthing Place, the only freestanding birth center owned and operated by a black midwife in Houston. Today, Afua has over 30 years of experience and has assisted in over 800 births. Her philosophy in her practice is that the mother is the captain, the partner is the co-captain and she is the advisor. Through The Birthing Place, Afua not only provides outstanding clinical care, but also provides emotional and educational support to the community. The Birthing Place offers group prenatal visits and partner support groups so that the entire family feels supported. In addition to helping people birth out of the hospital, in her beautiful community birth center, Afua also provides supportive care to those who need to birth in the hospital. She has worked tirelessly to increase access to VBAC and vaginal breech birth in her community. During Hurricane Harvey, Afua opened her heart and her birth center to those in need, ensuring that high-quality care was available during this national emergency.
