MANA 2019 Speaker
The Big Push for Midwives is a national campaign and collective impact project to secure license laws for
Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam,
and the Virgin Islands. Representing tens of thousands of U.S. citizens who work for increased access to
CPMs, community maternity care, and more birth options for all American women, the Big Push provides
vital “labor support” to the courageous moms, families, midwives, and grassroots activists working to
pass legislation / implement new licensure laws. The Big Push helps those who sacrifice to push forward
the national movement for community maternity care and increased birth options. As studies have shown,
states where community midwives practice legally, are licensed, and fully integrated into the maternity
health care system provide better access to care and better outcomes in that state.
The Big Push assists individuals, organizations, and coalitions to build their strength and extend their
reach, bringing midwifery out from illegal underground economies. Sharing public policy and public
education experience, highlighting strategies and best practices, discussing tools to use, and reviewing
tactics to avoid, the Big Push empowers state-level advocates to push efficiently and effectively for CPMs
legal status regulation.
