Midwives of Color
MANA believes that the most enriching and educational conferences include people from diverse backgrounds, and for midwifery to thrive we need to hear the perspectives of midwives from all communities. Recognizing the historical barriers to inclusion of midwives of color, and their integral role in helping US midwifery to grow, the MANA Board of Directors are pleased to offer complimentary and reduced-rate registrations to midwives and students of color.
If you would like to be considered in the lottery for a complimentary spot, please email the Treasurer with your name, contact information, and whether you are a midwife or student midwife. The deadline to apply for the lottery is
July 1, 2018extended to July 15 and you will be notified by July 25, 2018 if your name was randomly selected to receive a complimentary registration. Please note that travel and hotel are not included in the scholarship. It is for full conference registration only.

Everything You Need to Know to Present a Poster at the MANA 2018 Conference
The Midwives Alliance welcomes submissions of posters from students and professionals. A poster is created to:
- disseminate information from an original research project;
- review best practices or issues in reproductive health, birthing care, or midwifery;
- communicate an outreach project or initiative;
- convey a new concept or innovative work in health equity and social justice; and
- summarize the evidence on a particular clinical practice.
Posters are displayed at the conference for attendees to view at their leisure. The conference schedule will also include a designated time when presenters will be by their posters to answer questions and interact with attendees. This can be an excellent time to share your enthusiasm and expertise, gain support for an initiative, and receive feedback on your project.
How to Make a Poster
For many, making a conference poster is a new skill. Don’t let that stop you from presenting your poster at MANA 2018! There are lots of resources to help get you started. Learn more by reading the MANA Poster Tips & Guidelines document.
Beginning in 2014, the Midwives Alliance issues an award for the best poster presentation in each of two categories: student/apprentice poster and graduate/professional poster. Judging is done by members of the MANA Division of Research.
- In the student/apprentice category, the winning presenter will receive a free year of membership to MANA, and the student’s school and advisor or preceptor and practice will also be recognized.
- In the graduate/professional research category, the winning presenter will receive a free year of membership to MANA, and the author’s institutional or practice affiliation as well as advisor or preceptor (if applicable) will also be recognized. In addition, the winner will receive a 30-minute phone consultation on the winning project with an experienced researcher from the MANA Division of Research.
Why wait? – Apply now!
If you have an area of expertise, a new model, or a research project that would be of interest to midwives and others involved in birth, please consider sharing what you know with conference attendees by submitting a poster! If you are an attendee at the conference, please make sure to check out the wonderful posters and see what you can learn!
Deadline to submit poster abstracts is:
July 30, 2018Extended to August 31!
Honoring Ellen Harris-Braun The annual poster session at the MANA conference is hosted by the MANA Division of Research. All posters are considered for the Harris-Braun Outstanding Poster Award for Research, which is named after Ellen Harris-Braun, midwife, computer programmer, and researcher extraordinaire. On October 28th, 2016, Ellen passed away from breast cancer. Ellen was the Director of Database Development for the MANA Division of Research and, together with her husband Eric, designed the data collection software for MANA Stats. The Harris-Braun Outstanding Poster Award was founded in Ellen’s honor, and represents the incredible contributions of Ellen and her family to midwifery and birthing families.
