Impact of Domestic and Sexual Violence on Women's Health: Implications for Midwifery Care

Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence) and Sexual Violence are major public health problems which affect millions of women each year. Seen across all cultures and populations, there is now acceptance that these experiences have a major impact on health, not only acutely but in the long term as well. Additionally, the ACE study has shown that childhood exposure to violence and trauma has long-reaching impact on health.  As multiple exposures to trauma have a cumulative effect. it is essential that midwives understand the prevalence and impact of theses experiences. The session will review the incidence/prevalence of DV/SV, their impact on health both in the short and long term. It will review the components of trauma informed care and present a framework for screening/ addressing issues of DV/SV and their sequelae in the patients we serve.
