Newborn Hearing Screening and Parent Education to Help Children Reach Their Full Potential

Most states have mandated newborn hearing screening programs and some provide portable machines for CPMs to perform screenings for babies born out-of-hospital. We will review the rationale for routine newborn hearing screening, the midwife’s role in early hearing detection, risk factors for early childhood hearing loss, the screening procedure, interpretation and management of results, and communication with parents. This workshop will include hands-on demonstration of the procedure using an automated ABR machine, case studies, and experiential learning. It is relevant to midwives who wish to perform screenings, as well as those who do not perform screenings and others who would like to better understand early childhood hearing loss and detection.
