Midwives provide a critical link to quality, compassionate care for a range of health care needs, including providing referrals for medical care. Birth care providers often do not have the tools or support to assist clients who do not want to continue their pregnancies, especially when personal feelings and attitudes conflict with the provision of care.
In this training, participants will learn basic, non-directive pregnancy option counseling techniques, and the importance of informed consent and client autonomy in making those decisions. Current evidence-based information will be used to provide participants with tools for answering questions and addressing common myths about reproductive health care including abortion care. Participants will gain new skills to provide accurate, caring referrals for abortion care that respect client’s autonomy, confidentiality, and informed consent.
